– WATER MIST
Water mist systems are used for special applications in which it is decided that creating a heat absorbent vapor is the primary objective. This type of system is typically used where water damage may be a concern, or where water supplies are limited. NFPA 750 defines water mist as a water spray with a droplet size of “less than 1000 microns at the minimum operation pressure of the discharge nozzle.” The droplet size can be controlled by the adjusting discharge pressure through a nozzle of a fixed orifice size. By creating a mist, and equal volume of water will create a larger total surface area exposed to the fire. The larger total surface area better facilitates the transfer of heat, thus allowing more water droplets to turn to steam more quickly. Steam, which absorbs more heat than water per unit time, will then more effectively cool the room, thus reducing the temperature of the flame.
Water mist firefighting system is a fire protection similar to the Sprinkler firefighting system, the main difference is the “Reactive Surface Area Per litre of Water” which is higher in Water mist firefighting system to reach 3000-6000m², comparing to 2m² in sprinkler system. It means Water mist firefighting system can be much more effective than traditional sprinkler systems.
Another difference is the Operating Sensitivity / Speed (R.T.I.), which is extra fast in Water mist firefighting system (2.5mm Bulbs:18.9) compared to sprinkler system (3mm Bulbs: 50). Simply it means that, Water mist nozzles can detect and start actuate in a fire 2.5 times faster than sprinkler head which has an RTI of 50.

Operation – Water mist systems can operate with the same functionality as deluge, wet pipe, dry pipe, or pre-action systems. The difference is that a water mist system uses a compressed gas as an atomizing medium, which is pumped through the sprinkler pipe. Systems can be applied using local application method or total flooding method, similar to Clean Agent Fire Protection Systems.
A water spray for which the Dv0.99, for the flow-weighted cumulative volumetric distribution of water droplets, is less than 1000 microns at the minimum design operating pressure of the water mist nozzle.

High Pressure System A water mist system where the distribution system piping is exposed to pressures of 500 psi (34.5 bar) or greater
A distribution system connected to a water supply or water and atomizing media supplies, that is equipped with one or more nozzles capable of delivering water mist intended to control, suppress, or extinguish fires and that has been demonstrated to meet the performance requirements of its listing and this standard.

Water Mist Fire Systems Overview
Water Mist Sprinkler Systems work by breaking water into a cloud of very small droplets that greatly increases the surface area available for absorbing heat. When water turns to steam on contact with the fire it reduces heat and rapidly expands preventing oxygen entering the fire.
Mist systems can use less water than conventional water sprinkler systems effectively suppressing and extinguishing fires but should only be used in fighting fires in contained compartments without ventilation or apertures.
